I’m hearing that Showtime, in an effort to further monetize and exploit their original programming, is contemplating direct-to-dvd films based on some of their series. They’re looking at copying the succesful model employed by SyFy content producers, including the Battlestar Galactica and Stargate franchises, by releasing movies on dvd, that can later be aired on the network.

No definite confirmation which series will go this route,  but Showtime is said to be looking at testing this with at least one of their signature series, including Dexter, The Tudors, and the upcoming Hero, for a late 2009/early 2010 release. If we are getting Dexter direct to dvd movie(s), expect an announcement by the 2009 San Diego Comic Con, in July.

Keep your fingers crossed…this would be great news, making the year-long wait between seasons that much easier!
